Electricians were at risk for exposure to asbestos when they worked with electrical insulation, or renovated or upgraded wall, floors and ceilings of older buildings. The process of wiring or rewiring a building or industrial facility often requires the electrician to crawl through or disturb areas where asbestos was or is present in the form of asbestos-containing products.
Asbestos-containing materials electricians may come in contact include:
- Electric Wiring Insulation
- Asbestos-containing insulation
- Gaskets – High Temperature Gaskets
- Cement siding
- Cement wallboard
- Plaster
- Ceiling tiles
- Spackling compounds
- Electrical Panel Partitions
Electricians regularly worked around asbestos or asbestos-containing materials without adequate protection and as a result are at risk of developing mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases. Today, products used by electricians do not contain asbestos and electricians involved in the renovation or repair of older building and industrial facilities know the importance of protective gear.
